Early on, Martinez (2-1) looked like that pitcher as he cruised through the first four innings before the Rockies broke loose. He'd struck out five before Atkins homered over the left-field wall and Hawpe hit a drive to right.
Martinez lasted just 4 1-3 innings, his shortest outing since coming off the disabled list June 3. The Mets, playing for the fourth time Manuel, got off to a quick start. Jose Reyes led off the game with a triple into the right-field corner and scored on Luis Castillo's sacrifice fly. David went 0-2 with two walks against the Rockies. His average tumbled to .274 |

Carlos Delgado hit a two-run homer as part of a five-run second and John Maine composed himself after a shaky first, lifting the New York Mets to a 7-2 win over the Colorado Rockies on Friday night.
Interim manager Jerry Manuel won for the second straight game, his first winning streak since taking over for the fired Willie Randolph. He's now 2-1 at the helm of the Mets. Trot Nixon hit his first homer in a Mets uniform, a solo shot in the third, after being acquired from the Arizona Diamondbacks on June 13. Some notables stats for the evening: Carlos Beltran was the only Met to go 3-5, but Delgado, Easley, and Chavez all went 205. John Maine got his third hit of his career, as well. He is 3-114 in his career. As for David Wright, his night was successful, going 1-5 in this game, singling in an RBI in the ever-lasting third inning. Another of his contributions came on a slide by the Mets dugout out in Coors Field, catching a foul ball to end the inning, and on a diving catch of a ball hit by Willie Taveras to rob him of an extra base hit against Aaron Heilman in the bottom of the ninth inning. |

"I have a hard time taking myself out of the lineup," Wright said. "But if he comes up to me and says hey, I want to give you a rest, I have no arguments with that."

Jerry Manuel was looking for his first win at the helm of the New York Mets and thanks to the red-hot Jose Reyes and a clutch hit by David Wright, coupled with a shot over the left center wall by Damion Easley, he got exactly what he wanted.
David's clutch hit was one of two singles on the day, as he went 2-5 with two RBIS. His average currently sits at .278. |

Wright on Randolph's Firing |

"One of the positives that comes out of this is that we can finally put this to rest," David Wright said before last night's game against the Angels. "Today we can go out there and know that Jerry Manuel is going to be the manager from here on out. We can go out there and focus on winning games and playing baseball."
Over the last couple of weeks, when we lose, he's back on the seat," Wright said. "And even when we win, there's questions about the manager's future, so I think it's been a big distraction. Has it kept us from going out there and winning games? I don't think so. But at the same time, it's a distraction. You're focusing and concentrating on things that are happening away from the field rather than getting the job done on the field." Source: Newsday |

Mets lose first game in post-Randolph Era, 6-1. |

Johan Santana did not bring his A game last night as the Mets dropped their first game with Jerry Manuel at the helm.
The Mets played sloppy defense, committing three errors that led to three runs, and ace Johan Santana (7-5) came out on the wrong end of what was billed as a pitching duel against the Angels' John Lackey in the Mets' 6-1 loss in front of 40,122 at Angel Stadium. The Mets' offense never got anything going against Lackey. They scored their only run in the first inning on a double-play ground ball hit by David Wright with Damion Easley on third. Easley replaced Jose Reyes, who left the game with stiffness in his left hamstring after opening the game with a single up the middle, not to mention a temper tantrum on the field and in the dugout. David continues to struggle at the plate and while his average remains at .276, he went 1-4 with a single and an RBI in the first, hitting into a double play which scored Reyes's replacement, Dameon Easley for the first hit of the night. On a more positive note, David's night as DH meant that he ended his streak of playing every inning of every game this season and there are no longer any other players who have done the same. |

The Mets have fired Willie Randolph, and named bench coach Jerry Manuel their interim manager.
Pitching coach Rick Peterson and first base coach Tom Nieto have also been relieved of their coaching duties. Ken Oberkfell will be hired as the team's new first base coach, Dan Warthen will be the new pitching coach, and Luis Aguayo will be Manuel's bench coach. Oberkfell had been the manager of the team's Triple-A New Orleans affiliate, while Warthen had been the pitching coach, and Aguayo the team's field coordinator. There will be a press conference at 5pm, East Coast time, during which Jerry Manuel will officially be introduced as the new manager. |

Carlos Beltran homered twice in the Mets victory over the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim. Pelfrey pitched a decent outing, despite Feliciano giving up two singles that were the starter's basemen, and Aaron Heilman was the most pleasant of surprises of the evening, getting two big outs in a row to hold the lead. Billy Wagner also performed well for the save.
David went 1-4 tonight, with his 19th double of the season, knocking in two runs and scoring once himself. His average remains at .276. |
