Sidney Ponson pitched a gem in his return to the New York Yankees, silencing Carlos Delgado and the rest of the New York Mets for a 9-0 victory Friday night and a split of their two-ballpark doubleheader.
After both teams got police escorts for their rush-hour bus trips to Shea Stadium, Bobby Abreu went 4-for-4 with a walk and three RBIs as the Yankees enjoyed a blowout of their own. Ponson outpitched Pedro Martinez with six shutout innings, and the Bronx Bombers broke loose in Queens for their first win in four Subway Series games this season. The Mets arrived back at home about 1 hour, 20 minutes before the night game, with most players still in their gray road uniforms and carrying equipment as they made their way to their clubhouse. The Yankees arrived about 25 minutes later, dressed in street clothes. David still did well during the second game, going 2-4. His average remains at .285 |

Game 1: Delgado's 9 RBI's help Mets destroy Bronx bombers, 15-6! |

It was the Carlos Delgado show in the Mets' final game at Yankee Stadium.
Delgado set a Mets record with nine RBIs and Luis Castillo scored a career-best five runs in a 15-6 rout over the New York Yankees. He hit a two-run double off Edwar Ramirez in the fifth inning and his 12th career grand slam in the sixth, a drive against Ross Ohlendorf that landed in one of the last rows of bleachers in right-center. Delgado added a three-run homer in the eighth off LaTroy Hawkins, a drive into a corridor beyond the right-field wall. Delgado's nine RBIs were one better than Dave Kingman's total for the Mets in an 11-0 victory at the Los Angeles Dodgers on June 4, 1976. Delgado's 44th multihomer game gave him 444 home runs for his career, breaking a tie with Kingman for 34th on the major league career list. Carlos Beltran hit a two-run homer and scored four runs as the Mets completed their first three-game winning streak and series sweep at Yankee Stadium. David Wright had a very successful game as well, going 4-5 with three RBI's. His average sky-rocketed to .285 in game one of the doubleheader. |

Wagner's kids threaten to trade Wright... from fantasy team. |

If Willie Randolph getting fired and an 11-0 loss to the worst team in baseball didn't convince David Wright the Mets needed more urgency, a message from Billy Wagner's kids did the trick.
Wright is on their fantasy baseball team, but if he wanted to stay there, things had to change. "They threatened to trade me," Wright said. With a brutal stretch of games starting today, it has become clear the urgency is there. Four games against the Yankees will be followed by four-game visits to the Cardinals and Phillies, who lead the wild-card race and NL East, respectively. The day-by-day approach is out the window -- they're going to take this stretch 12 games at a time. "This is going to be a big week for us," Wright said. "We could crawl back into this thing and prove that we're one of the elite teams in the National League. It gives us that opportunity and that's all you can ask for, for a team to control its own destiny and prove what they're made of. These next 10 to 12 days, I believe we have the opportunity to do that." While there's little reason to be optimistic about the Mets' chances to make the best of the stretch considering they just dropped a home series to the lowly Mariners, they at least understand that this is as good a time as any to turn things around. On one hand, at 38-39, they're massive underachievers who have lost 11 of 19 entering today's day-night doubleheader against the Yankees, but at 5½ games behind in the wild card and just 3½ behind the Phillies, nothing is out of reach. "We're fortunate to have played as mediocre as we have and still be this close to the top," Wright said. "It's a blessing in a way. We can really solidify us as a playoff contender over these next couple of weeks." Credit: Star Ledger |

Wright said he felt "crisper" at the plate after the day off -- time off he didn't want in the first place. He had played every inning of every game, the only major-leaguer to do so, but Manuel pulled him into his .office Monday night after an 0-for-3 night and told him he was sitting down.
"I don't have much say with Jerry," he said. "He told me I have off. It's not debatable." If it was up for discussion, Wright would have tried hard to get into the lineup. But after his two-homer night, he admitted the time off was what he needed. "The bat felt a little lighter," Wright said. "Pitches that I was just missing, not getting to before the day off, I got to tonight. I stayed through it, and more .importantly, mentally, it was a break mentally. It was 24 hours where I didn't really think about anything baseball related." Wright came into Wednesday night's game hitting just .241 in June with one home run since May 29, spanning 89 at-bats. But that changed in the first inning. Clearly, nothing could put a damper on this feel-good night for Manuel. He flashed his smile and laughed throughout his first postgame news conference at home after a win. And a large reason behind that victory was his decision to rest Wright, which wasn't lost on the player. Said Wright: "I'm always trying to make Jerry look good." Credit: Newsday |

Wright slams two out of the park, Mets steamroll M's! |

David Wright made his new manager look masterful.
Forced to take a night off Tuesday for the first time this season by Jerry Manuel, Wright proved the move smart with one quick swing Wednesday - and then another. Jose Reyes added a three-run homer and Maine didn't allow a hit until Jeremy Reed singled leading off the fifth inning. The Mets scored four runs off Batista in the third on one hit, Reyes' three-run homer. All four runs were unearned thanks to third baseman Adrian Beltre's throwing error to second base that allowed Carlos Delgado, who was hit by a pitch, to advance to third. He scored on Marlon Anderson's sacrifice fly. Reyes homered after a walk and an out. In defensive news, Marlon Anderson made a phenomenal catch after Aaron Heilman came in for relief, snagging a ball after sliding, and later, tumbling, through left field. David had a phenomenal game after his day off, going 2-3 with two HR's, three RBI's, a walk, and two runs scored! His average climbed to .276. |

The night was filled with a ton of negatives, and very few positives as Oliver Perez was knocked for 6 runs, Claudio Vargas for 4, and Pedro Feliciano for 1.
Only Tatis and Schneider had a successful night, going 3-4. No one else in the lineup had a hit all night. But Carlos Beltran and Jerry Manuel might have liked to hit the home plate umpire. After coming out to protect Beltran from the ump, who was baiting him, Manuel was bumped and then tossed. Beltran got back in the box... and was baited AGAIN. This time, mumbling something and getting tossed. This caused the center fielder to snap and he began yelling at the umpire in question. Still, Manuel and Beltran's fire didn't translate to the rest of the lineup, who failed to score a single one. David Wright rested all night, so his numbers remain the same. However, he will be in tomorrow's game as John Maine takes the mound to try and prevent a sweep. |

Wright to sit out Tuesday's game. |

At the plate he was 0-for-3. In the field he made the error that opened the door for a four-run inning in the Mets' 5-2 loss to Seattle. Third baseman David Wright had a bad game Monday night and will be given Tuesday night off. It's his first day off this season. "Tonight, I thought David appeared fatigued," manager Jerry Manuel said. "So for me, and I told him this, tomorrow he won't play. I hate to rest our regular players when we're at home. They should play in front of our fans, but I just think he (needs a day off)."

Wright blamed himself for keeping the inning alive.
"Obviously a play that I should make," he said. "I played back, thought the ball was hit harder than it was. I waited back and tried to transfer it a little too quickly, bobbled it. We should have never been in that situation to begin with. That's a play that we need to be out of the inning without any runs or damage." Credit: The Star Ledger |

Mets drop first game to Mariners, 5-1. |

Santana had another disappointing start, this time against the Seattle Mariners. In fact, he gave up a GRAND SLAM to the Mariners' PITCHER, Felix Hernandez.
The Mets' first run came on a wild pitch, scoring Beltran. Their second run came in the bottom of the ninth, with one out, when Beltran singled in Castillo. However, back to back strikeouts by Delgado and Easley ended their hopes rather swiftly. David Wright had a costly error in the second inning, for the Mets, who had won five of seven entering the series. Carlos Beltran accounted for two of New York's four hits, driving in a run and scoring once. Jose Reyes had the two other hits, both singles. While he didn't have a hit in his 0-3 performance tonight, David's walk in the ninth did put pressure on reliever, Sean Green. His average is now .275. |

Mets rebound to take series. |

A week of turmoil ended on a high note for the New York Mets. Mike Pelfrey carried a shutout into the sixth inning, Carlos Beltran hit a two-run homer and the Mets beat the Colorado Rockies 3-1 on Sunday to wrap up a winning road trip under interim manager Jerry Manuel.
He took over for the fired Willie Randolph after the Mets beat the Los Angeles Angels to open a six-game trip last Monday. New York lost in Manuel's debut on the bench, but rebounded to beat the Angels and take two of three from the Rockies. David went 1-3, with a single that knocked in Jose Reyes's run in the first inning. Wright's average moved to .275. |
