![]() Guess who showed up again? Yep, "Good Ollie" pitched a good game for the New York Mets this evening, allowing only two hits, one of which was a solo home run by Brad Hawpe in the fifth inning that accounted for Colorado's only run. While he walked six batters, he did strike out seven on the evening. Brian Schneider broke his 0-12 slump at the plate with a single in the fifth inning, later scoring on a Jose Reyes single. Jose was 2-4 tonight, with his 23th double of the year and 41st RBI of the season. After a scare during batting practice in which he was hit in the shoulder by a ball off Schneider's bat as he was taking part in fielding drills at first, Carlos Delgado proved his was just fine, hitting his 19th double of the year in his 1-4 performance. Damion Easley continues to produce as a starter for the New York Mets, going 2-4 tonight with the big hit of the game: a solo HR in the 8th inning to break the 1-1 tie and give the Mets their seventh straight win. David Wright struggled at the plate tonight, going 0-4. His average fell to .285. |

Wright on All Star Selection |

Sleeping in Friday morning, David Wright said he missed four phone calls from Omar Minaya. When Wright got around to checking his voicemail, he feared the worst.
"I saw that (the general manager) called and left a couple of messages, saying he needed to talk to me about something urgent," Wright said. "I thought that I was traded. I called him back and he told me, 'Congratulations.'" Minaya was calling to tell Wright that he had made the National League team for Tuesday's All-Star Game, punching his third straight ticket to the Midsummer Classic. But this time, all he needs is a MetroCard to get there. Chicago Cubs outfielder Alfonso Soriano - who was voted in by fans - is on the disabled list with a broken hand, and Colorado's Matt Holliday was named the starter in his place, creating an extra roster spot, which Rockies manager Clint Hurdle, the NL skipper, awarded to Wright. Before Friday's announcement, Wright had finished second to Brewers outfielder Corey Hart in online voting for the National League's final roster spot. "I'm very appreciative," Wright said. "It seems like I got quite a few second chances and for Clint to put me on this team, I'm extremely grateful and thankful." Before taking part in pregame stretches Friday, Wright chased down Hurdle - whose Rockies began a three-game series at Shea Friday night - to thank him. The Colorado skipper said giving the nod to Wright didn't have anything to do with a New York player playing in front of the hometown crowd. "I was looking for a fit," Hurdle said. "(The AL All-Stars) have a lot of lefthanded pitching. David's numbers against lefthanded pitchers are significant." Wright entered Friday night's game hitting .398 against lefties and .288 with 17 home runs and 70 RBI overall on the season. "Wow, I have to congratulate him," said Jose Reyes, who was informed about Wright making the team by a Daily News reporter. "He has the numbers." Credit: Daily News |

Third baseman David Wright of the New York Mets will replace fan-elected starting outfielder Alfonso Soriano of the Chicago Cubs on the National League All-Star roster. N.L. All-Star manager Clint Hurdle of the Colorado Rockies made the announcement today in conjunction with Major League Baseball.
Soriano, who is currently on the disabled list, is unable to play in the 2008 All-Star Game but will attend the festivities. Colorado Rockies outfielder Matt Holliday, the All-Star reserve outfielder who received the highest vote total on the Player Ballot (461 votes), will replace Soriano as a starting outfielder for the National League. Wright, who had been a candidate in the Monster 2008 All-Star Final Vote, will be making his third consecutive appearance in the Midsummer Classic. Wright (.288, 17 HR, 70 RBI) was a fan-elected starter in 2006 and 2007. Credit: MLB.com |

"Naturally I'm disappointed," the statement read. "It's always a thrill to go to the All-Star Game, no matter how you get there. I want to thank the fans who voted for me. The only thing I'm concerned about now is helping us get back to the postseason."
Before he left the Mets clubhouse, Wright had once again told reporters how much he wanted to go to the All-Star Game, which will be played Tuesday night in Yankee Stadium. "I don't want the three days off," said Wright, who has played in all but one of the Mets' 92 games. "All the guys in here are looking forward to getting some time off, spending it with the family, hanging out -- but when you get this close to being an All-Star and you get a chance to participate in New York, you want it." |

Get out the Brooms! Mets sweep Giants! |

Fernando Tatis was the MVP of the Mets in the past six games they've won.
Today, Tatis homered, doubled twice and drove in four runs and the surging Mets won their sixth straight game Thursday, beating the San Francisco Giants 7-3. Best known as the only major leaguer to hit two grand slams in a single inning, Tatis delivered the first three extra-base hit performance of his career. The Mets' winning streak is their longest since a seven-game string in August 2006. Tatis contributed in a big way Sunday, too, with a two-run homer in the 12th inning that beat Philadelphia. David Wright doubled twice, and scored the go-ahead run in a four-run seventh inning. It was his last bid to earn the final spot on the NL All-Star team - Internet balloting closed shortly after the game, and the public-address announcer at Shea Stadium frequently urged fans to text in their votes for Wright. Scott Schoeneweis won in relief of John Maine. Tatis' second double of the game drove in two runs and put the Mets ahead 3-0 in the third. Carlos Beltran hit an RBI single, then ran right through third base coach Luis Aguayo's stop and easily scored when the throw home was cut off. David had another fantastic game this afternoon, going 2-3, with his 23rd and 24th double of the season and two walks, scoring twice: in the third on Beltran's single and in the seventh Tatis's homer. He also stole his 11th base of the season, his third in the last week. Wright's average is back up to .288. |

Johan Santana FINALLY got his seventh win of the season, after a long drought that left him winless since June 1st. In his five scoreless innings, he allowed three walks, yet struck out five. His pitch count was in the seventies when the rain began to fall and after an hour delay, Jerry Manuel made the decision to pull him from the game.
Aaron Heilman pitched a 1-2-3... 4-5-6 sixth and seventh innings, Sanchez pitched an easy eighth, and "Mighty" Joe Smith came in and shut them down in the ninth. Ramon Castro went 2-4 in the game with 3 RBI's, all of which came on his fourth inning home run that put the team ahead 3-0. Carlos Delgado continues to look like an entirely different player, going 3-4 with two runs. He is batting .429, thus far, in the month of July. Jose Reyes and The Human Highlight Reel (Sr. Chavez) both went 1-4 on the night. Wright struggled at the plate tonight, going 0-4, but did have a walk in the first inning and his 10th stolen base of the season. David's average took a slight dip to .285. Still, David is chasing Corey Hart for the final spot on the NL All-Star team, so remember to vote... Wright Now! |

Mets continue to roll, move to a 1 1/2 games behind Phils, beating Giants 7-0. |

The Mets moved to a game and a half behind the Phillies in the NL Eastern Division after tonight's defeat of the SF Giants, 7-0.
Mike Pelfrey continued to look as impressive as he has since the end of May, winning his fifth consecutive start to move to 6-5 on the season, with a winning record. Big Pelf pitched seven solid, shutout innings, striking out five and allowing only three hits and no walks. His ERA now dips below the 4.00 mark at 3.93. Beltran hit a three-run homer in the first inning and Carlos Delgado also connected off Lincecum to help the Mets win their fourth in a row. Fernando Tatis added a 450-foot solo homer in the eighth off Kevin Correia. Scott Schoeneweis and Joe Smith each worked a perfect inning to complete New York's third shutout this season. Lincecum, selected to his first All-Star team Sunday, allowed four runs and a season-high nine hits in six innings. He struck out four, increasing his NL-high total to 126. Lincecum gave up a one-out single to Endy Chavez in a 32-pitch first inning, then walked David Wright. Beltran lofted a 2-2 delivery to right that carried over the fence for his 250th career home run. Delgado added a 435-foot drive to right-center with two outs in the sixth for his 16th of the season and fifth in the past 13 games. Argenis Reyes opened the seventh with a pinch-hit single off Jack Taschner for his first major league hit. Jose Reyes reached on a bunt single, and the Mets made it 6-0 on two-out RBI singles by Beltran and Damion Easley. David Wright had another good night at the plate, going 1-3 with a single, a walk, and a run scored on Beltran's home run. His average is still .288 on the season. |
