Announcement concerning Do the Wright Thing Gala
Posted on 27 Oct 2009 by Danielle

Unfortunately, according to a representative at the David Wright Foundation, there is a good chance there will not be a Do the Wright Thing Gala this year. While the David Wright Foundation is doing well, the current economic climate has impacted some of its sponsors.

If anything changes, we will let you know. Stay tuned.

I'm BACK!

While the Mets might have officially fallen out of contention (and I ran out of bandwidth for seven days), I have returned! Recaps and commentary will be back as of tomorrow's game.

BUT... I come baring gifts. Check out this video a loyal reader (I'm lookin at you, TexasPolarBear) submitted of the four Wright brothers (David, Matt, Steve, and Dan) taking St. Louis by storm during the All-Star Game. It's actually pretty funny.

Enjoy!

Stokes continues to struggle in Mets 5-2 loss
Posted on 03 Sep 2009 by Danielle
The Mets kept pace with the Rockies for 7 1/2 innings Wednesday, taking a tied game into the late innings, before Colorado's expanded bench dealt the Mets a 5-2 defeat. The big blow came on Jason Giambi's first swing of the bat in a Rockies uniform, a bases-loaded single that broke a 2-2 tie and sparked a three-run rally.

Tim Redding gave the Mets exactly what they needed Wednesday night, pitching into the seventh in a duel with Rockies starter Ubaldo Jimenez. Though the Mets' struggling starting staff may have had second billing to the Wild Card-leading Rockies, Redding proved the perfect antidote to such concerns.

Redding pitched 6 2/3 innings and gave up two runs on seven hits and a walk, matching Jimenez inning-by-inning as his club took an early lead, then saw the Rockies catch them in back-to-back frames and pull ahead in the third before the Mets drew even again in the fourth. Redding's only problem was his pitch count, which was up to 114 when he left with two outs in the bottom of the seventh.

The Mets started quickly out of the gate, with Angel Pagan doubling to lead off the first and going to third on an infield single to the pitcher by Luis Castillo. Daniel Murphy lofted a sacrifice fly to left to send Pagan home and put the Mets ahead.

Colorado tied it with a single swing of the bat in the bottom of the inning, as Seth Smith launched a round-tripper into the right-field bullpen.

Redding's only walk of the game came with two outs in the third and Smith at the plate again. Smith came around to score after back-to-back singles from Todd Helton and Troy Tulowitzki gave the Rockies the lead.

Jeff Francoeur knotted the game in the fourth with a long home run to left field, his 12th of the season and his second career hit in 16 career at-bats against Jimenez -- both homers, both this season, making him the only player to go deep twice off the fireballer this year.

The Mets staged a rally in the eighth with the game still tied, when Jeremy Reed pinch-hit for Wilson Valdez and singled to center. Anderson Hernandez pinch-hit for reliever Pedro Feliciano and dropped a bunt in front of the plate that catcher Yorvit Torrealba scooped up and threw to second, just nabbing Reed.

In the bottom of the eighth, Brian Stokes stumbled, walking Tulowitzki with one out and then yielding a double to left by Brad Hawpe. An intentional walk to Ian Stewart set up Giambi's second successive pinch-hit appearance with the bases loaded since signing with the Rockies and joining the club with the expanded September rosters.

On Tuesday night, Giambi walked in a run, never swinging the bat.

Giambi swung at the first pitch he saw Wednesday, driving it just out of reach of a leaping Hernandez at shortstop and into center for a two-run single that would prove to be the game-winner.

Torrealba plated Stewart with a single to left and stole his first base of the year. Stokes walked the bases full before giving way to Francisco Rodriguez, who retired both batters he faced.

David Wright did not play tonight, as he is still easing back into a normal schedule since his return from the disabled list.

9/2 - What Wright Said...
Posted on 02 Sep 2009 by Danielle
About the mentality of the game:

"It’s what you’re supposed to do. You’re supposed to go out there and play hard. With that comes some injuries, and when you get hurt, you do your rehab, you get better and get back in the lineup. That’s just what you’re supposed to do."

About finishing the season:

"It’s important for us as a team and for each individual to finish up strong, to make some positives going into the off-season where we feel like we can build on that going into next year. It’s important that we play good team baseball."

About his recovery:

"I don’t ever want to go on the DL. I want to be out there no matter if we’re winning the division, if we’re losing the division or 10 to 15 games out. I want to be in there fighting with my teammates and finishing out the season.

"It’s something that, looking back on it, was probably the right decision. But at the same time, this is what I enjoy doing. I enjoy playing, and I want to be in the lineup. If I had to go back and do it again, I’d probably still put up a fight. I still wouldn’t want to go on the DL. But you look back on it, and it allowed me to heal the way I’m probably supposed to heal and not try to rush back into anything."

About the new Rawlings S100 Helmet:

"There just need to be a few adjustments. Obviously, I really don't care what I look like. If it provides a little more safety, I'm all for that. I just need to get it to fit a little better. I don't know. Maybe I've got an odd-shaped head."

About being teased:

"It's all in good fun. Those guys were laughing at me on the other side. Our guys were laughing at me. ...They were on me all night. All the guys in the field were yelling at me. Everything is back to normal, I guess."

About his overall return:

"I saw the ball better than I thought I would tonight. Just my timing was a little off and the pitchers made some good pitches. I felt a lot better than I thought I would. The parts you use for baseball are a little sore, but for the most part I feel pretty good."

About not being in the lineup again tonight:

"I don't know if I have a choice."

Wright returns to lineup, Pelfrey can't return to winning form in 8-3 loss
Posted on 02 Sep 2009 by Danielle

Todd Helton homered into the smoky sky and drove in four runs as the Colorado Rockies snapped a five-game losing streak with an 8-3 win over the New York Mets on Tuesday night.

All-Star third baseman David Wright was activated from the 15-day disabled list and played his first game for the Mets since getting hit in the head by a pitch from San Francisco's Matt Cain on Aug. 15. Wright went 1 for 3.

Wearing his bulky, new protective batting helmet, Wright helped New York take a 2-0 lead in a wild first inning when he singled on the first pitch thrown to him and scored.

Jorge De La Rosa settled down from his shaky start, though, and the Rockies took out Mets right-hander Mike Pelfrey early, tagging him for seven runs, six earned, on six hits in four innings.

De La Rosa allowed just one earned run and four hits in six innings. He walked three and struck out six despite throwing exactly 50 balls and 50 strikes.

Carlos Gonzalez also homered for Colorado, his high drive slicing through the haze that meteorologists blamed on the California wildfires more than 800 miles away and landing in the second deck in right field.

Gonzalez's two-run shot off Pelfrey in the fourth gave Colorado a 3-2 lead and Helton added a run-scoring single before sending his 14th homer into the seats in right with two on in the fourth.

Back-to-back triples off Rockies reliever Matt Daley by Cory Sullivan and Angel Pagan in the seventh made it 7-3.

Pagan's baserunning gaffe cost the Mets an even bigger first inning.

After a leadoff single, Pagan advanced to second on Luis Castillo's one-hopper to center field but he thought Gonzalez had caught the ball on the fly and started sprinting back to first. After a few steps he realized his mistake but was thrown out, his blunder taking away Castillo's single on a play that was ruled a fielder's choice.

Wright put runners at the corners with a single and Jeff Francoeur lined out to Gonzalez, whose throw to the plate appeared to have a chance at nailing Castillo before hitting the pitching rubber and sailing over the head of catcher Yorvit Torrealba, allowing Castillo to score easily on the sacrifice fly.

Gonzalez was charged with an error because Wright advanced to second base on the wild hop, and he came around to score on a double by Fernando Tatis, making it 2-0.

The Rockies got a run back in the bottom half when Garrett Atkins drew a bases-loaded walk.

In his return from the DL, David Wright went 1-3 with a single and a run scored, maintaining his pre-concussion average of .324.
Wright to wear S100 helmet upon return
Posted on 29 Aug 2009 by Danielle
As David Wright prepares to come off the disabled list Tuesday, he plans to make good on his word. Even before he was struck on the helmet by a Matt Cain fastball on Aug. 8, he said he would wear the new extra-protective S100 helmet from Rawlings, no matter how it looked.

After the Mets' recent homestand, Wright vowed he would immediately put the new headgear to use when he returned.

"When they get it to me, I’ll wear it," he said.

Players can wear the new lid at their discretion. Rawlings has been preparing to distribute the new helmets to all major league teams the first week of September, but it already made at least one delivery, to Cubs pitcher Ryan Dempster. He wore the larger helmet Saturday against the Mets.

Rawlings is expected to have one available for Wright when the Mets play Tuesday at Colorado.

The new helmet, with extra padding, has been shown to withstand pitches delivered at 100 miles per hour from 2 feet away in independent testing. Under current testing standards, helmets must withstand the impact of balls delivered at 60 m.p.h. from 2 feet.
