Niese shines through eighth, snags first major league hit in Mets' 5-0 win over Braves
Posted on 13 Sep 2008 by Danielle

In his first start as a Met, Jonathon Niese was clearly nervous.

In his second start as a Met, it seemed like the Braves were more afraid than he was.

In the bottom of the first inning, the Mets got off to a quick start yet again. Ryan Church singled to center and David Wright smashed a home run over the center field wall on a 2-1 count to give New York a 2-0 lead.

Beltran later singled to left and then advanced on Delgado's ground out, scoring on a single by the Fantastic Fernando Tatis. 3-0.

In the bottom of the second, with two outs, Jose Reyes homered to left o a full count to make it 4-0.

Later on, in the bottom of the seventh, Carlos Beltran his his 24th home run of the year to left field on a full count.

With an 0-2 count on Omar Infante, the crowd at Shea was chanting, "Let's go Niese! Let's go Niese!"

And go, he did.

Niese pitched 8 scoreless innings, allowing eight hits while striking out seven.

Ayala closed it out in a non save situation.

And as the scoreboard at Shea read...

Tonight's win was "Niese and Easy."

Notable performances came from:

The 3-for crew...

Jose Reyes, with two singles and a home run, his 14th of the year, as well as a run scored and an RBI. (3-5)

Carlos Beltran, with a home run, one double, and one single, as well as a stolen base, two runs scored, and an RBI. His average continues to shoot up, landing at .285 after tonight. (3-4)

Fernando Tatis, with three singles and an RBI. His average is back up over .300, now at .301. (3-4)

Daniel Murphy, Binghamton Boy No. 1, was 1-1 in his pinch hitting role, prompting every Mets fan to wonder why doesn't get to pinch hit over Luis Castillo, who was 0-5 combined on the day.

Jon Niese earned his first hit of his young career, as well.

David Wright was 1-3 in tonight's game, racking up two RBI's (number 110 and 111) on his home run in the first inning.

His average remained at .296.
Bullpen blows it for Santana... yet again.
Posted on 13 Sep 2008 by Danielle

Jeff Francoeur hit a tying single in the eighth inning and the Atlanta Braves rallied against Johan Santana and the Mets' bullpen, beating the Mets in the opener of a doubleheader for their first one-run road win in more than a year.

Omar Infante's sacrifice fly put the Braves up 3-2, capping a three-run eighth. Atlanta handed the Mets their eighth loss in 28 games, cutting their NL East lead to two games over Philadelphia.

New York is still three up in the loss column after the Phillies beat Milwaukee 7-3.

The Braves won a one-run game away from home for the first time since a 7-6 victory on Aug. 9, 2007, also at Shea Stadium.

It was New York's second doubleheader in seven days and sixth this season, its most since playing eight in 1998.

Santana struggled with his command early but managed to keep Atlanta off the scoreboard and carried a 2-0 lead into the eighth.

Consecutive singles by Brian McCann and Yunel Escobar to start the inning chased Santana, 6-0 in 14 starts since his last loss June 28 against the Yankees. He left to a warm ovation and tipped his cap to the crowd.

Once again, New York's shaky bullpen couldn't hold a lead for the lefty ace. Schoeneweis gave up a single to Casey Kotchman that loaded the bases, and Francoeur grounded Brian Stokes' first pitch through the middle for a two-run single.

Josh Anderson sacrificed, pinch-hitter Greg Norton was intentionally walked and Infante gave Atlanta the lead with a sacrifice fly to left.

It was the seventh time in 31 starts with the Mets that Santana left with a chance to win only to have the bullpen blow it. Five of those collapses have come in the ninth inning.

Braves relievers Will Ohman and Jeff Bennett combined for a perfect eighth.

The Mets loaded the bases with none out in the fourth on two singles and a walk. Damion Easley hit an RBI single and another run scored when Brian Schneider grounded into a double play.

New York had a great chance to expand the lead in the sixth after loading the bases with none out again. This time, Hampton escaped unscathed.

The 2000 NL championship series MVP for the Mets, Hampton got Easley to ground into a 5-2-3 double play. Schneider was intentionally walked before Santana struck out.

Hampton was booed all afternoon. He jilted the Mets after their 2000 World Series run, leaving for a $121 million, eight-year contract with Colorado that expires this season.

David was 1-3 in today's game with a walk, his average remaining at .296.

He will start in the second game of the doubleheader.
What are your thoughts...

I'm thinking of making a website about how Jerry Manuel should be the Manager of the Year.

The same for Delgado for MVP...

What do you think?

Please comment and let me know.

Update again
Posted on 13 Sep 2008 by Danielle
Well...

It seems as though I just can't get it to work.

SOOOOO I'm going to just post until it gets lost off of the front page. Unless someone knows how to fix it (and yes, I did try the cutephp forums that have been of NO help whatsoever), I'm going to move on.

So without further adieu...
Update on Site Problems
Posted on 12 Sep 2008 by Danielle

Unfortunately, it's not going to be as easy as I anticipated to fix the site. What has been up on the site since the 8th is probably lost. But that's only four days worth, so I'm not terribly worried.

I'm heading home tomorrow for the weekend from college, so I'll better be able to fix it on my home PC instead of my macbook.

In the meantime, the stats have been updated.

Technical Issue...
Posted on 11 Sep 2008 by Danielle

I'm currently having a technical issue with the site. Luckily, it is on an off-day, so while I'm trying to fix it, everything will remain the way it is.

I will try and update the sidebar though tonight.

Boo Phillies!

Santana and Delgado bring Mets back in Game Two of doubleheader, Mets win 6-3.
Posted on 07 Sep 2008 by Danielle

After a less than stellar 2007 and start to 2008 season, Mets fans everywhere were ready to throw Carlos Delgado to the wolves.

But since June 27th, Carlos Delgado has been the very reason the Mets are holding their contender status for the first time since last August.

The first got off to a rocky start for Johan Santana after both Utley and Werth got on base, with Howard singling in Utley for a 1-0 lead.

But the Mets got back to their good habits, with Church, Wright, and Beltran all scoring in the bottom of the first.

In the third, Ryan Howard smacked his 40th home run of the year on the first pitch he saw from Johan, shortening the lead to just 3-2.

After this, Johan settled in rather nicely... and so did Carlos Delgado.

Carlos hammered a ball over 460 feet to right on an 0-2 count to bring the Mets another insurance run, 4-2.

And yet, he wasn't done. Carlos smashed another one to right, just past the mezzanine, to put the Mets ahead 5-2.

In the top of the eighth, after getting Utley to ground out, Santana gave up a double to Jayson Werth and was pulled from the game to a standing ovation from the Shea Faithful.

Feliciano and Stokes combined to get two outs and end the inning.

In the bottom of the eighth, thirty-eight year old Damion Easley legged out a stand-up triple and was quickly brought in on a sacrifice fly by Brian Schneider.

In the top of the ninth, things got a little bit difficult for the Mets.

With Luis Ayala pitching, Shane Victorino hit an infield single, but on an errant throw by Schneider, he moved up to second. Then Dobbs flied out to to Beltran and new Philadelphia acquisition Matt Stairs hit an infield single to advance Victorino.

Tracy came in to pinch hit and hit a sac fly to Endy Chavez, who made an outstanding catch against the wall, to score Victorino and make it 6-3.

And with a man on second and two out, Jimmy Rollins stepped up to the plate.

But the New York Mets had the last laugh in a bout of poetic justice, in which Rollins struck out in the Phillies last trip to Shea.

Notable performances came from:

Ryan Church, who was 2-4 with a run scored.

Damion Easley, who went 2-4 with a run scored on a double and a triple this evening.

And of course, Carlos "Esta en fuego" Delgado was 3-4 with a single and two bombs for home runs that drove in four RBI's.

On the pitching front, Johan Santana gave up two earned runs on five hits and three walks, while striking out six in 7.1 innings pitched. He also had an infield hit in today's game.

David Wright struggled today, going 0-3 in tonight's game, reaching base once on catcher's interference and scoring on Beltran's single.

His average dropped to .289.
In Game 1 of Doubleheader, Moyer dominates as Martinez melts down... Mets lose 6-2.
Posted on 07 Sep 2008 by Danielle

Facing the first-place Mets for the sixth time this season, the 45-year-old Moyer allowed only a surprise bunt single by Robinson Cancel and an infield hit by Damion Easley over seven shutout innings.

New York was scoreless for 16 innings in the series before breaking through for two runs in the eighth against Scott Eyre, but it came too late.

Looking to leave town tied for first place, the Phillies send Cole Hamels to the mound in the 8:05 p.m. nightcap. Johan Santana gets the ball for the Mets in a pressure-packed matchup of left-handed aces.

The Phillies swept a three-game series at Shea Stadium last September, beginning their charge past the collapsing Mets to win the division title. The onus is on Santana, acquired from Minnesota last offseason and signed to a $137.5 million, six-year contract, to prevent another costly sweep for New York.

After Brett Myers won 3-0 on Friday night, Moyer also was on top of his game when Philadelphia needed it.

Using his typical array of floaters and dashing to the mound for warmup pitches even before the Mets lumbered off the field, he beat an ineffective Martinez (5-4) in the makeup of Saturday's rainout.

Philadelphia improved to 7-10 against the Mets this season after winning the final eight matchups last year.

The 36-year-old Martinez lasted only four innings, giving up six runs and seven hits. He felt stiffness during his previous start, a win at Florida, and returned to New York to work out while the Mets completed a 6-2 road trip with a three-game sweep in Milwaukee.

Martinez walked Jayson Werth on four pitches in the second and Dobbs doubled over the head of right fielder Fernando Tatis.

After Matt Stairs' sacrifice fly, Martinez made a key mistake. With first base open and the pitcher on deck, the three-time Cy Young Award winner gave up a two-out RBI single to Carlos Ruiz, who had three hits.

Ryan Howard doubled leading off the fourth and went to third on Werth's single before Dobbs drove an 0-1 pitch to right for his eighth homer. He also had a two-run shot in the series opener and is 9-for-25 with three home runs and eight RBIs against the Mets this year.

Ruiz doubled and scored on Jimmy Rollins' pop-fly double that dropped between shortstop Jose Reyes and left fielder Nick Evans as they struggled to track it in the sun.

Moyer and Martinez both were touched up when they squared off Aug. 26 in Philadelphia, a game the Phillies won 8-7 in 13 innings after rallying from a seven-run deficit.
