Wright wins Gold Glove Award!!! |

For the second consecutive year, David Wright is the recipient of the National League Gold Glove Award for third basemen. A Gold Glove is given to a player who is deemed to be the best defensively at his position. League managers and coaches, who can't select their own players, vote each year on the award, which recognizes one player from each league for all nine positions on the diamond. This year's award provided reason for pride for Wright, who endured criticism after he won his first Gold Glove last season -- despite ranking seventh among National League third basemen with a .954 fielding percentage. Wright improved both his standing and his percentage this season, finishing fourth in the NL with a .962 mark. Wright tied for the league lead among third basemen with 416 total chances, and he did not commit an error over a span of 36 consecutive games from Aug. 7 to Sept. 16. It was one of three error-free stretches of at least 28 straight games for Wright. Congratulations are also in order for Carlos Beltran, who was also the recipient of a Gold Glove Award for his outstanding play in center field for the third year in a row. |

Wright ranked first among NL 3B by Elias Sports Bureau |

The Mets' David Wright stands first among National League third basemen in the annual ranking of all big league players calculated by the Elias Sports Bureau for Major League Baseball. He also ranks second to Phillies second baseman Chase Utley among all second basemen, third basemen and shortstops in the league. The statistics, measuring performance in 2007 and '08 combined, were issued on Friday morning. Wright was the lone Mets player to rank first at his position and the only one to rank as high as second in his position group. Wright ranked first among NL third basemen over the two seasons in three of the seven categories used to measure performance of third basemen, second basemen and shortstops -- home runs, RBIs and plate appearances -- and he was awarded a value for each category. He ranked second in on-base percentage and total chances (two for each), third in batting average (three) and 16th in fielding percentage (16). His total value was 26. The average rank for the seven categories -- 26 divided by seven -- was 3.714. |

A season during which he established career highs in runs batted in, runs scored and home runs earned David Wright recognition as a member of the 2008 Sporting News National League All-Star team. In a vote of 41 general managers and assistant general managers, the 25-year-old, fourth-year third baseman was the lone Mets player elected. Wright's led National League third basemen in runs (115), RBIs (124), total bases (334) and hits (189) by wide margins, led in home runs (33), stolen bases (15) and walks (94), placed second in doubles (42) and placed second to Chipper Jones in batting average (.302 to Jones' .364), slugging percentage (.534 to Jones' .574) and on-base average (.390 to Jones' .470). Wright equaled the franchise record for RBIs, exceeding his previous career high by eight. Mike Piazza also drove in 124 runs, in 1999. His 33 home runs were three more than he had hit in 2007, and ranked second on the Mets to Carlos Delgado's 38 in 2008. His runs -- 115 and two more than he scored in 2007 -- were second among the Mets in '08. Carlos Beltran scored 116. |
