Mets Throwback: Art Shamsky
Posted on 12 Jan 2010 by Danielle
As we focus on the future of the New York Mets, I wanted to take a moment to post about a man who was a part of a magical team in our history: the '69 Mets. This past season, I was able to attend the fortieth anniversary celebration at Citi Field and it brought absolute tears to my eyes. And one of the members of the team who was present at the ceremony was number 24, Art Shamsky.

In addition to re-opening his site with an entirely new layout, which features a slideshow banner, Art has made available some signed memorabilia. Of course, my favorite is a team photo from 1969, signed by 28 members of the roster, including Tom Seaver, Nolan Ryan, and Yogi Berra!

However, I strongly recommend that you pickup a copy of his book, "The Magnificent Seasons," which covers the magical year in which the Mets, Jets, and Knicks all found their way to their first championships. It's a must read for all New York sports fans!

David does good in CT

Mayor Pavia today announced that two City organizations, the Glenbrook Community Center and the Yerwood Center, will each be awarded $8,250 grants from New York Mets Superstar David Wright’s David Wright Foundation. “As a player in New York, I enjoy and appreciate our Stamford fan base and I think it’s important to contribute to a community that cares for its youth as much as Stamford does,” Wright stated. Last year, Wright, the consummate role model of a professional athlete, contributed to the Stamford Girls and Boys Club through The David Wright Foundation. “We chose these two organizations because they embody values that are important to pass on to young people; I’m proud to contribute to their efforts,” Wright said.

“The Glenbrook Community Center and the Yerwood Center are pillars of the community and to attract the attention and support of an amazing guy like David Wright is a phenomenal tribute to these youth programs,” Mayor Michael Pavia said. “Most of us viewed things like baseball gloves and homework help as a natural right of childhood but a lot of kids don’t have such luxuries. And without ‘all stars of humanity’ like David Wright stepping up, these kids would be forced to do without,” Pavia said. “We’re just thrilled about these grants and we hope David Wright’s example inspires others to share their good fortune with kids like these,” Pavia said...
Bay Watch has ended; Jason Bay officially a Met!
Posted on 02 Jan 2010 by Danielle

I know I'm late to the party, but what kind of webmistress would I be if I didn't at least post about it.

I woke up at 7am this morning as our cruise ship pulled into the Port of Miami, fresh off our last stop in Turks and Caicos, and gleefully turned on my cell phone for the first time in eight days!

Even better, I was greeted with the news, via TWS's own Andrew, that Jason Bay had signed with the Mets. I'm actually quite happy with the signing, as I never thought Holliday would actually leave St. Louis and a lineup that featured Albert Pujols. For all that money and a perpetual shot at the playoffs, would you?

Remember, they got Bay at a relatively decent price in a year without many worthwhile free agents, from an offensive perspective. And honestly, I think Bay will follow in the steps of Carlos Beltran as a guy who was apprehensive in coming to the Big Apple, but turned out to love it. Perhaps, Beltran will help him adjust, as will everyone's BFF, David Wright, and his previously-established buddy, Jeff Francoeur.

I'm going to make it known right now that I am of the firm belief that Jason's going to start off slow. Like... .255 slow. But I know he's going to have a good May. Trust me, it's coming. But in the end, we'll all be happy with our acquisition ultimately.

And I, for one, will be attending opening day on my birthday to welcome him to Flushing. Will you? Feel free to post comments.

SI calls Wright one of most likely under 30 to make Hall
Posted on 25 Nov 2009 by Danielle

4. David Wright. Yes, it was weird that he only hit 10 home runs in 2009. Weird and disconcerting because everything else about Wright's season seemed to be more or less in line with the rest of his career. He hit doubles at the same pace, triples at the same pace, stole bases like he usually does and walked at roughly the same pace. He struck out quite a bit more than usual, which could be a hint, but his average stayed about the same, his on-base percentage stayed about the same, too.

He just stopped hitting home runs. It's tempting to say this was because of the Mets' new stadium... and that no doubt played a role. Wright's home run swing fit old Shea Stadium. But the truth is that while he hit only five home runs at home, he also hit only five home runs on the road. It's a strange thing to see home run numbers drop so dramatically for a 26-year-old player, especially a player as good as Wright.

So, the question here: When thinking about future performance and such, how much stock do you put into a daunting home run drop? I don't think you can just ignore it. Still, it seems to me that Wright is such a good player in so many ways -- he hits for average, draws walks, steals bases, plays good third base defense (though his defensive numbers did fall off in 2009), and there's reason to believe his home runs will come back. I still think he's a good Hall of Fame bet. I think he'll get there.
