3/18 - What Wright Said... |

(About the win over Puerto Rico)
"If you can't get excited about last night's game and what we were able to accomplish," Wright said, "You don't enjoy the game of baseball." (He would say to potential-Classic players) He quickly said, "You got to do it." (His plans are for 2013) "If we had a sign-up sheet right now, you'd have 28 guys in there who are banged up, injured or not, that would sign up again,"said Wright, who fouled a ball off his left foot in his first at-bat against Venezuela on Wednesday and went for X-rays after the game. "And I would be the first one on that list." (The Classic helped him with the clutch for 2009) "We're talking about being up with the game on the line," Wright said. "When you wear those three letters across the front your chest, you have quite a bit of pressure and weight on your shoulders. I think that can only help." (His 17-year-old brother thought about his performance) "My brother sent me a text that said, "This is, by far, the coolest thing you've ever done," Wright said. Credit: NY Times (On the injuries to Team USA) "We've got to stop getting hurt," Wright said with a smile, referring to the wave of injuries. "A lot of this from what I see is stuff that, if it's in the middle the season, you can play through. But obviously the teams want to take every precautionary measure to make sure you're ready to go the first week in April." Credit: AP |

Venezuela tops Team USA, takes top Pool 2 seed into California |

Venezuela hung six runs on USA starter Jeremy Guthrie in the second inning, aided by an Adam Dunn error but highlighted by RBI doubles from Blanco, Jose Lopez and Miguel Cabrera. Four of the runs charged to Guthrie were unearned, but they weren't cheap. They were the result of a barrage of base hits against the right-hander. But despite grabbing a 6-1 lead, Venezuela had to scrap to hang on. Starter Armando Galarraga surrendered three runs in 3 1/3 innings before handing it over to his bullpen. After Cabrera's RBI single made it 7-3 in the fourth, Ramon Ramirez permitted Mark DeRosa's two-run homer that cut the lead to two. An RBI groundout by David Wright pulled the United States within a run, but Max Ramirez drilled a three-run dinger in the bottom of the sixth to provide more breathing room. It's the first trip to the knockout round for Venezuela. The team was eliminated in the second round of pool play in 2006, finishing third in its group behind the Dominican Republic and Cuba. Venezuela will play in the first semifinal at Dodger Stadium on Saturday night at 9 ET. The United States will face the Pool 1 winner on Sunday at 8 p.m., with the winners of those two games playing in the finals on Monday at 9 p.m. David Wright was 1-5 in last night's game with a single and an RBI. Despite being injured, X-Rays turned up negative and both Wright and Mets GM Omar Minaya said he was fine and unconcerned. |

Wright injured in game, but will carry on to LA |

David Wright was injured in the second inning of Team USA's 10-6 loss to Venezuela. After fouling a pitch off of his toe, Wright was clearly in pain. However, only Brian McCann remained on the bench and the third baseman had to play through the pain.
Immediately after the game, X-Rays were taken and they came back negative. However, Wright cracked the nail on his big toe. Nonetheless, David will fly with Team USA to California and play in Round 3. Note: The late nights of baseball have finally caught up to me and I am EXHAUSTED. Full recap will be up tomorrow, as well as the updated gallery photos on Flickr. - Danielle |

UPDATE: David's Choice in #4 |

|
After doing some inadvertent digging via google for some more quotes from last night, I managed to discover why David Wright chose number four as his alternate number. Apparently, growing up, Wright wore the number four, as it was his favorite number. When he came up to the majors in 2004, third base coach, Matt Galante, wore the number. As a result, David was given the number five. |

Sometimes it's all about your country and your bragging rights. David Wright lived out a dream last night, a dream that began in high school, when he first watched a different Team USA play baseball. The Mets third baseman lifted a one-out, bases-loaded single down the right-field line off Fernando Cabrera to knock in two runs and lead Team USA to an improbable, 6-5 victory over Puerto Rico at Dolphin Stadium. The victory sends Puerto Rico home and the U.S. to the World Baseball Classic final four in Los Angeles. The All-American kid got the All-American hit in the three-run ninth. That hit was bigger than Carlos Delgado's two-run homer in the top of the fourth and Carlos Beltan's leaping catch that robbed Brian McCann of a home run in the bottom of the fourth. Before these games began, Wright stood along the third-base line and said the tournament was about pride of country and bragging rights in the Mets clubhouse. That was important, too. He came up a winner on both accounts. "I'm going to send them a text," Wright said outside the Team USA clubhouse about a half hour after he was dog-piled by jubilant teammates. And what will that text to Delgado and Beltran say... |

(On where this hit ranks in his top moments)
"You're talking about representing the United States of America," he said. "You've got that across the front of your chest. To be able to get that hit, that's got to be right up there at the top of the list." (About the nature of the WBC) "We're taking this very seriously," Wright said. "This isn't an exhibition to us." Credit: AP "Getting a crack at a team that embarrassed us a few days earlier, to have the resiliency to bounce back in the ninth and steal one from them was pretty big," Wright said. Credit: The Press Enterprise (On his on-field reception) "The celebration was pretty wild," Wright said. "I never thought that we'd be dogpiling in March, but it was pretty special and something I'll always remember." Credit: MLB.com |
