It's Jeter v. Wright! |

The Mets' David Wright and the Yankees' Derek Jeter will compete for money for their foundations this season in a batting average contest sponsored by Delta. The airline will make a $100,000 donation to either the David Wright Foundation or Jeter's Turn 2 Foundation -- depending on who finishes with the higher average -- and will donate $50,000 to the loser's foundation (that's the runner-up's foundation, not "The Loser's Foundation"). Wright's foundation focuses on "health, emotional development, and education for children," according to the press release. Jeter's looks to "motivate young people to turn away from drugs and alcohol," it says. Credit: Star Ledger |

Hey, everyone! Sorry that I haven't been updating the sidebar a lot lately, but I'm working on switching hosts and it's pain. In addition, my internet at school is less than cooperative. There also hasn't been much news as of late to post in the newsfeed, but with the season rapidly approaching, that is sure to change in the next week. I will be blogging live from Citi Field on Saturday, when I attend the exhibition game in honor of my birthday. Very exciting! Andrew will be attending Opening Day at Citi Field (lucky! I have classes!) and I'll try to get him to text me updates from the game. Anyway, I'll be getting back to a regular update schedule very soon! Let's go Mets! Danielle |

J. J. Putz and Carlos Delgado had last seen each other a week ago, from a distance of 60 feet 6 inches. Putz, pitching for the United States, struck out Delgado in the eighth inning of a World Baseball Classic elimination game against Puerto Rico. As they got reacquainted Tuesday morning in the Mets's clubhouse, Delgado was still thinking about that at-bat. "My teammate throws me a 2-1 split?" said Delgado, shaking his head, as Putz walked past. "When a guy throws 96?" Putz quipped, "I got lucky." No organization sent more players to the Classic than the 16 the Mets sent. On Tuesday, they welcomed their final three participants, Putz, David Wright and Francisco RodrÂguez, back to camp with the lively banter and playful teasing that had been lacking at points during the last three weeks. At one end of the clubhouse, Wright ribbed Jose Reyes about the Dominican Republic"â„¢s two surprising losses to the Netherlands. "If I had a Netherlands jersey, I would have worn it," Wright said. Rolling his eyes, Reyes turned to Jose ValentÂn... |

ARTICLE: David Wright Okay After Foul Ball (FULL update) |

A cracked big toe didn't wipe the smile off David Wright's face or diminish his enthusiasm for the World Baseball Classic.
The Mets All-Star third baseman fouled a ball off his left foot in Team USA's 10-6 loss to Venezuela on Wednesday night at Dolphin Stadium. The ball plunked Wright's big toe, cracking the nail and causing a great deal of discomfort and concern for a team riddled with ailments. "A little sore. I'll be all right," said Wright, maintaining a smile and sense of humor for reporters afterward. "No problems. Fouled a ball off. Cracked a toenail. Other than that, things are good." Wright maintained a positive outlook and gutted it out, playing nine innings on a sloppy, wet field on a night Team USA didn't have any reserves to replace him. Earlier in the day, the squad lost the services of first baseman Kevin Youkilis, who is done for the tournament because of a left ankle injury. Wright wrapped the toe in between innings, and afterward, he was examined by Marlins physician Dan Kanell. An X-ray was taken and it came back negative, which was the best news he heard all night... |
